The Charlie Lab MegaBeat One was launched in the mid-90s as a hard disk MIDI player by the Italian brand Charlie Lab. It was designed to read standard MIDI files (Format 0/1) from an internal hard drive. The unit could hold the equivalent of 600 720KB floppies (≈5000 songs), making it highly efficient for live use without needing to change disks. Charlie Lab, founded by engineer Carlo “Charlie” Paterlini, was well-known in southern Europe during the ’90s and early 2000s. The MegaBeat One included a Roland SCD-15 sound card, providing high-quality General MIDI/GS instrument playback. It also featured an RJ45 port for use with the “Digitar” guitar-style foot controller.

A single front knob adjusts both headphone and main output volume. It uses an external 230V AC to 12V AC power adapter. The MegaBeat One can display lyrics (via SysEx) in sync with MIDI playback and group songs for set-based playback. It remains of interest today mainly for collectors or retro-tech enthusiasts. Manuals and demo videos are available online for reference.
